ISTP-23 offers sponsors and exhibitors a unique opportunity to interact with, or expose products and services to, an international group of researchers working at the forefront of transport phenomena.
“Transport Phenomena” is the term engineers and scientists use to describe the ways that properties or substances are transported by physical processes. Some examples are heat transfer by conduction, convection or radiation; particulate transport by fluid motion or the transport and mixing of chemical reactants as in combustion. The generality of transport phenomena underpins their importance to all aspects of human endeavour, and understanding them is at the core of many of the major issues facing humanity as it embraces the 21st century.
Applications of transport phenomena range in scale from the transport of water vapour within or between the Earth and its atmosphere, down to heat transfer in micro-channels for the cooling of computer chips or at an even smaller level, electromagnetic heating of nano-particles carrying drugs in the human body. In the New Zealand context advances in energy generation and distribution, food production and processing, or high technology products and services rely on research in the field of transport phenomena. Because of the generality of transport phenomena it is often critical that the research is multidisciplinary.
The International Symposia on Transport Processes have been run under the auspices of the Pacific Centre of Thermal Fluids Engineering annually for the last 22 years and have established a reputation for being multi-disciplinary fora for the discussion of the latest results and developments in transport phenomena. The symposia attract between 150 and 250 researchers from the Asia pacific region and beyond. ISTP-23 is the first to be held New Zealand and ISTP-4 (Sydney) was the only other to be held in Australasia.
